What we tell your patients
Estimated lifetime risk for specific conditions
- For each condition on our panel, we tell members how their risk compares to that of the general population. Estimated lifetime risk takes into account the "odds ratio" as reported by the original studies; the lifetime risk of developing the condition; the prevalence of the genetic marker in the reference population; a standard model for combining the risks when there are multiple markers for a single condition; and of course, the individual's genetic makeup. This model for estimating individual risk has been developed by the Navigenics science team.
Personal genetic profile at multiple points in the genome
- We tell members which "version" of the genetic code they carry.
- Members also have access to summaries of the published, peer-reviewed scientific literature behind the genetic information they are presented.
Strategies to reduce risk or manage each condition
- The strategies we provide to members may include watching for early signs; making lifestyle modifications; taking advantage of further screening tests; and taking steps to prevent, delay or minimize the condition.
- Our board-certified Genetic Counselors are specifically trained in providing support services for genome-wide risk assessment. They are available to our members for telephone consultations.
- In addition, we provide medical information about each disease from our collaborators at Mayo Clinic.
- We encourage members to share their results with you and discuss how best to improve their health, but caution them and you about the potentially sensitive nature of this information and possible consequences of including it in the medical record.
